My work is about emotion.

I pour my feelings into the paintings, holding nothing back, in order to create an intimate connection.

Yorkshire Moors.jpg

I’m inspired by nature and by the wild open spaces of the Yorkshire landscape—that’s where I feel a deep connection with nature but also with myself, especially my childhood tomboy self who loved to build dens and play by the river. I’m fascinated by the way our personal histories are always layered over current experience.

We go somewhere we’ve been many times before and we’re there in the present moment, but all our past selves are there with us too.

In the end, my art is about connection.

Connection to self, connection to place, connection to the past, connection to emotions, and connection to others.

The more unique and personal a piece is, the more universal it becomes as we are all human and can connect through our shared experience.

THE PROCESS

It’s…messy!

I work on multiple pieces at one time exploring the same idea or theme in different ways. Working on many pieces at once allows me to express myself freely without getting too controlling at an early stage.

IT’S IMPORTANT TO LET THE PAINTINGS EVOLVE NATURALLY. I BUILD UP LAYERS OF PAINT AND ALLOW EACH ONE TO EMERGE IN ITS OWN TIME.

When the meaning or idea becomes clear, I start to make decisions about colour and tonal value and composition and textures—all of which have to be carefully balanced. Often paintings get lost again at this stage but that’s all part of the process. I simply keep working until they re-emerge.

I AM ALWAYS open to the possibility of painting over everything I’ve done To get to the perfect expression—the absolute best that I am capable of in that painting.

RECENT WORK

My most recent series is “The Layered Landscape.” I am so excited about these paintings - they are the closest I have come to expressing my feelings about this place I call home.

Here is a sneak peek (these are details, not whole paintings) ….

The layered Landscape series was shown at the Inspired By gallery in Danby, North Yorkshire from May 28th to July 10th 2022.

Life Force SERIES

This series is a response to the poetry of Ted Hughes as well as to my beloved Yorkshire moors. The series is documented in my book “Life Force” which is available here.

PATTERNICITY

This series was inspired by the patterns of our daily lives that were disrupted by the pandemic. Being human has become more challenging during this time, yet the natural world has flourished in our absence.

For me, the pandemic is a reminder that control is always an illusion and life is incredibly precious.

In these paintings, organic brush strokes and uncontrolled marks disrupt structured patterns. Layers of half-hidden text suggest a meaning that never quite materialises. And a primarily cool colour palette is interrupted with pops of vibrant warm colour.

This series is a celebration of life. The paintings burst with life and energy and joy and I hope each one is a reminder that life is precious and fleeting and that - even if we can’t make sense of it all - we are so fortunate to be here..
