‘pieces of me’ [Part i]

i believe art is about connecting, one human to another

These these paintings are my most personal works to date.

As artists, we collect experiences, we absorb them, we reshape them, and then we share them. We say “this happened and this is how it felt.”

In this way, we offer companionship and comfort to those who have had the same feelings.

These paintings were very much process-led, but I began with a series of clear parameters for myself. Most importantly, I worked on a visual language that would encapsulate some of my personal experiences over the last few years. There have been turmoil and challenges, sometimes more than felt manageable, and yet through it all there has also been hope.

Each painting began with a layer of collage combining vintage papers with personal paperwork and memorabilia collected over many years.

These papers created wonderful lines and textures as they were layered with paint and then sanded back, but they also rooted the work firmly in my past, which felt important.

This layering process also creates a rich experience that rewards closer inspection. I like to build my work over time, imbuing each painting with a sense of time-worn history. I believe art should be about more than surface impressions - if you stop to look for a few moments, you will find hidden surprises in each of the paintings.

Each painting is titled after a song that has personal meaning for me. Each one forms part of the soundtrack of my life for different reasons.

I created a playlist to accompany the paintings and you can listen here

These are my experiences, but I hope that the imagery and the titles will resonate with you. I hope you can find your own unique connection to one of these pieces.
