Artists never show this — but I am!
My newsletter is a little different this week. Recently I have been making diary videos about my studio practice and my life. These videos are generally buried at the end of my newsletters and often get overlooked.
This is such a shame. They are actually pretty incredible. Not because I am a great filmmaker (I'm not) but because they are that rare thing - a really honest look into what it means to work as an artist - including the ups and downs, doubts, and the failures. They also include demos of my painting practice - how I actually work.
So, this week, there are no written observations. Everything I want to say is already in the video. It holds the real value, the real teaching, and the real heart of what’s happening in the studio right now.
In the video, you see me trying to scale up from sketchbook to large canvas and completely losing the freshness that sparked the idea. You see the hesitation, the doubts — and how I react when things don't work.
Most artists only show the polished stages or the easy successes. They “teach" but they don’t show their vulnerable selves or the private, messy parts of their studio practice.
That’s why this video matters.
It’s a rare chance to see inside an artist’s studio before things are resolved — when all the uncertainty is still present. And if you’re an artist yourself, it might help you understand your own process better, or at least remind you that you’re not alone.
If you’ve been skipping the videos, try this one. It’s one of the most honest things I’ve shared.
