This painting is about landscape - specifically that rugged, wild moorland of the northern Pennines. But it is also about my personal response to that landscape and about my deep feeling of connection with it. The title comes from a collection of poems by Yorkshire poet Ted Hughes, and refers to the ancient kingdom of Elmet.
